A Literary Tag.

I’ve been tagged. :(
Again!!
By the same person who did it last time.

And this does seem to involve some mental effort. I don’t know if I’m up to that on a Sunday afternoon.
….

One book that changed your life?

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. Well it did not exactly change my life, but I read it as a teen and it taught me to look at the other side of every situation.

One book you have read more than once?

I don’t think I can answer this as I keep rereading most of my favourite books. These include most works of P. G. Wodehouse and Terry Pratchett and some of Arthur C. Clarke’s. But if pressed to name the one that hold a special place, it would have to be..
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird.

One book you would want on a desert island?

I couldn’t possibly choose from among my favourites. But I definitely wouldn’t want it to be Robinson Crusoe.

Practically it would make sense to have something like this.

One book that made you laugh?

Illegal Aliens by Nick Pollotta & Phil Foglio. If you haven’t read it yet, buy it or beg, borrow or steal it and read it today.

One book that made you cry?

I’m sorry. Where I come from, Gentlemen aren’t allowed to cry.

If you mean cry with frustration, many books qualify but Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things would top the list. I think I got to about the 60th page before I threw it out.

One book you wish had been written?

I’ll take refuge in fantasy. I would love to read a book which features Sam Vimes and the other Discworld characters in our own world. Terry pratchett please note.

One book you wish had never been written?

Das Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei. If Marx and Engels had not written this, WW I may not have happened. So Hitler wouldn’t have had a chance to write Mein Kampf.

One book you are currently reading?

John Keay’s India: A History.

A confession. I’ve been reading it in bits & pieces over some months now.

One book you have been meaning to read?

Long Walk to Freedom. I had the book with me for some months and had read up to the time Mandela went to work as a lawyer. But then, I had to return the book to my colleague who was moving away. I never got around to buying a copy for myself.

Now to tag 5 people.

Ah hah. This is the best part.**

This thing seems to have gone around quite a bit on the other side of the world. So I’ll tag people who are closer home.

  1. Navin at Blogocentricity.
  2. Lakshmi at Babblogue XL.
  3. Arunn at Nonoscience.
  4. Suresh at his Random Ramblog and
  5. Orthodoc at his eponymous blog.

**scan man tries to imitate Moof’s “evil snicker” and fails miserably. He just isn’t cut out to be nasty :)

you got your frustration off-loaded now…;)

i was thinking of making that pending “what is a porous medium” post before tomorrow, to discuss it with the students so that they can comment and discuss after my lecture…

and i need to change my theme. until now i spent time in doing it for Lakshmi at Babblogue XL…

so, is there a time limit to do this tag thing? can i do it in a day or two?

  2. 2 Moof

Awww Dr. Scan Man … I’m sure I heard an evil chuckle there … >;o)

I had a book that made me “cry in frustration” too … and I don’t believe I got to page 60 like you did … it was Dahlgren, by Samuel Delaney. I found it to be totally and completely unreadable.

And I must say - you’ve got me beat with the “Das Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei” … *LOL* … you’re way ahead of me!

By the way … I love “To Kill a Mockingbird” too …

  3. 3 Lakshmi

Thanks for the tag, scanman, I was passing through an acute case of bloggers block. This gave me something to keep babblogue going :)
    I have answered the questions.
The husband will answer your tag questions in the near future (sometime before the next kalpam, I am sure) as he is currently busy preparing for his class tomorrow.

Dr. Scan Man…I also love “To Kill A mockingbird”

  5. 5 Emer

So, you got it, too. *LOL*

It was a fun exercise on a dreary Sunday afternoon. I also like Roy’s The God of Small Things.
