As usual…
Here I am…
Minding my own business…
And along comes a habitual offender…
and does it again
A short digression before I play. Why seven songs and seven people? Is it because of the சப்தஸ்வரங்கள் (sapthaswarangal)?
Actually this meme was too easy…
I just picked the next seven songs that played on shuffle mode in my iTunes’ Top Rated Smart Playlist.
My selection conforms to the ‘instructions’ so helpfully provided by Moof.
List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your Live Journal/blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.
- Pyar mujh se jo kiya. A Ghazal by Jagjit Singh from the Hindi film Saath Saath (1982). Ghazals are to Indian music what Blues are to Western music.
- Everybody (Backstreet’s Back). Backstreet Boys, 1997.
- Mrs. Robinson. Simon & Garfunkel, 1968.
- Every breath you take. The Police, 1983.
- Right here waiting. Richard Marx, 1989.
- Laila o laila. A song from the Hindi film Qurbani (1981).
- Muthu mani malai. A song from the Tamil film Chinna Gounder (1992).
I guess that is eclectic enough
Now for a similar mix of seven people to tag…
Of course, the list will include some of the usual suspects…
- Dr. Arunn Narasimhan. I know that he will play after the usual initial grumbling.
- Lakshmi.
- Dr. Suresh. I’ll be very offended if you refuse a tag for the third time
- Orthodoc.
- Dr. Kannan Mutharasan. A Tamilian cardiologist in Chicago. Should be interesting to know what he listens to.
- Dr. Hébert. I haven’t seen him take part in blog meme yet. But he surely can’t refuse a music meme?! A New Orleanian with a Punjabi wife! How do you mix Blues & Bhangra?
- Karrvakarela. A native speaker of Urdu (I think?). Will it be Ghazals all the way?

Wow! Vijay! Was that really rap at the beginning of “Muthu mani malai?” That was quite an interesting blend! :o)
I laughed when I saw Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson.” I thought I was the only one who liked some of the old movie tunes. I’ve always been partial to Simon & Garfunkel’s music though - all of it.
Great choices! I really enjoyed getting to hear the Indian ones! Thank you!
*cough* … um … are still on talking terms? *evil unrepentant grin* >;o)
Hi Vijay,
That’s an interesting list. It’s always impressed me how effortlessly multilingual people from South India are and your selection is an example of that. A ghazal rubbing shoulders with the Backstreet Boys! What is the world coming to!
By the way, I really enjoyed Tamil music when I was younger. Didn’t understand a word but A R Rahman’s music was phenomenal. En Veetu Thottatil used to be a favorite. Maybe now you can tell me what it means?
Cheers,
KK
VJ (out of the closet scanman) I am looking forward to your friends choices but how do we get to hear them like Moof seems to be able to do??
Thanks Moof & KK.
Moof, that was just something a character in the movie says, just before the song sequence - actually not part of the song. Definitely not rap, which you wouldn’t find in my top rated list. Actually nowhere in my iTunes collection
KK, Good to know you’ve been introduced to Tamil music! I personally prefer Ilaiyaraja’s music over AR Rahman’s.
‘En Veetu Thottathil‘ is a beautiful song with great lyrics. I searched for but couldn’t get any translated lyrics. Here is a rough translation of the first stanza with the transliteration…
En veettuth thottaththil poovellam kaettuppaar
en veettu jannal kambi ellaamae kaettuppaar
en veettuth thennangeetrai ippodhae kaettuppaar
un paeraich chollumae.
En veettuth thottaththil - actually means ‘in the garden of my house,’ but the song roughly translates as…
Ask the flowers in my garden,
Ask the window grilles in my house,
Ask the coconut leaves in my house,
They will know (say) your name.
Hello Travelling Doc,
Thanks for stopping by. Click on the links that I’ve provided over the song names. They will take you to a site which plays them online on Real Player, which you should have in your computer or as a plugin in Firefox. I have no idea about IE.
They don’t play on my Mac even though I have the Mac version of Real Player. Moof
might be able towill help you out with that, I’m sure.Have you moved to Pakistan already?
Regards,
Vijay.
