Warning: Please skip this if you don’t want to read an overgrown man’s whining. This is an utterly shameless attempt at gaining some sympathy from friends.
I’m not happy today.
Tuesday is my weekly weigh-in day. The digital weighing scale in the radiology department is the place of truth.
I have lost only 600 grams over the past week. My weight remains in three figures (in kilograms).
So little to show for the many kilometers walked and the amount of fattening food that I gave up.
My wife is happy. She says this is the ideal amount to lose per week. She says I am liable to regain the lost weight faster if I lose it faster. I hope Suresh reads this.
It is daunting when I think of how many more kilograms I have to lose to look reasonably healthy again. At this rate, it will take me more than ten months to get to 80 kg.
That is an entire gestational period!
Considering the fact that there is a significant similarity in the shape of my midsection to that of a term pregnant woman, I guess the time span is appropriate.

I agree with your wife. If you lose it to fast it is easy to gain right back. I think you are doing good. Yes, just imagine you are pregnant and in 9 months it will all be over….hahaha.
Your wife is totally right. The recommended weight loss per week is 1-2 lbs, no more. Let me tell you this, those ten months are going to go by anyway, and if you do this, you will have accomplished this great achievement at the end of them.
Three years ago I started South Beach Diet, the healthiest one I could find after a lot of research. I lost 24 kilos slowly over a year, with various plateau periods along the way. Restricting carbs does help, no sugar, no white flour, only brown rice and whole wheat pasta. But eat regularly, no missed meals, never let yourself get hungry. A little tip, write down what you eat every day for just a few weeks, make sure you are not putting things in your mouth that are not good for you. If you have to put it in writing, it certainly makes you think twice about consuming it.
Sadly I have put 5 kilos back on so I have made a renewed effort. This exhortation is as much for me as you.
Not only that, for the walking your heart thanks you. Exercise increases your BMR, you meet with your friends, and your family will be happy that you are not keeling over from an early heart attack.
So go, Vijay, go! Stick with it!

Thanks for the encouragement Cathy & JMB.
There was talk among our group members of making a list of what each of us eat.
But it remained only talk.
Not one of us committed to writing down what we eat.
If you knew the kind of food that is regularly eaten in a Tamil household, you wouldn’t be surprised at the lack of commitment!
My wife has been away for two weeks and my mother is here to look after me and my daughter. Indian mothers are even worse (or better depending on your point of view) than Italian or Jewish mothers. The food that has been coming out of our kitchen is not worth talking about if I want people to believe that I’m serious about losing weight
Vijay, I find it quite difficult to remain on a diet of any sort. I have a really restrictive diet, but it’s not restrictive in a caloric sense … and I sometimes find myself compensating for the lack of french fries and other tasty goodies by doubling up on helpings of pie, etc. … not good for little moofie waist lines.
I’ve always thought that the only way to really lose weight is to readjust your way of seeing food … and changing your lifestyle. It makes sense - however, who wants to live longer so that they can watch other people eat the good stuff?
Sorry … I’m not helping, am I? >;o)
Seriously - stick with it, Vijay … you’ll feel a lot better if you do, and that, my friend, really is the bottom line.
Vijay, I don’t mean to rub it in or anything. As I am reading this blog post and commenting, I am devouring a cauldron of fruit-salad topped with strawberry flavoured ice cream. I feel very very guilty ! Perhaps my (bad) cholesterol is having a gala time inside. Or, am I just being my usual hypochondriacal self?
And as a mom myself, I agree with you about moms obsessing over the kid’s intake. Never mind what the age of the kid is !
