WILF Of The Day.

How gratifying to know that millions of people do this and it has been ‘verbified.’

Wilfing

It is the virtual equivalent of window-shopping, and a lot of us seem to be spending a lot of time doing it. “Wilfing” - or surfing the web without any real purpose - has become a new national pastime, according to a survey out today.

Although a newly-identified habit, more than two-thirds of the 33.7 million internet users in the UK admit to at least the occasional “wilf” (a term derived from the phrase “what was I looking for?”), while browsing the internet.

Here is my WILF of the day.

Let’s see what happens when we ask people in a shopping center in Nijmegen, silly questions dressed as Business types, Weird & Slutty people and Gothics.

I came across this good short video on stereotypes when I went looking for something on Jewish and Italian mother stereotypes for this comment.

I would love to hear from readers about what they came across today while ‘wilfing?’

Well I had to go away and wilf to find the answer to this question. I think the most bizarre thing I ended up reading yesterday was about da Vinci robotic prostatectomy. I followed a link from Grand Rounds at Dr Dork and then another and then another and there I was actually reading about the technique which is amazing. And I don’t even have a prostate! Sorry, no link like yours, which I couldn’t get to load unfortunately.

I wonder how da Vinci is linked to robotic prostatectomy. Thanks for giving me something to check out in my increasingly rare spare time.

The last time I “WILFed” was yesterday, and this is what I came up with:

    Coding Horror

On one of the posts (Firefox as an IDE,) I found a very nice extension for Firefox …

Firebug … which I installed, and which allows me to alter ANY web page I visit … which can be quite handy! I was able to use it to fix some issues in my online classroom with input boxes which were too narrow. Of course, I can’t save my changes, but I can use them on the fly.

The same post also recommended Web Developer Extension - which I already had.

WILFing can be pretty productive! :)
