Photo Hunt - “different”

Posted in: Photo Hunt

About | Theme: different | Roll

I have not participated in the Saturday Photo Hunt for a few weeks now.

For this week’s theme I have posted a set of photos that I took of a noteworthy display of food items in a cookery competition organized in my daughter’s school.

What is so different about this, you may wonder. Well, this was part of the Grandparent’s Day at my daughter’s school. They hold this on the 29th of February once in four years. This year they held it on a weekend before the 29th. There are many competitions and prizes distributed to grandparents who participated in various events over the weekend. This is followed by an entertainment program with dances, songs and skits by the students and the grandparents.

Some of the different prizes included grandparent with most number of grandchildren as students in the school. The winner had seven grandchildren in the school. And a prize for the oldest grandparent, which was won by a very healthy looking 102-year-old grandmother (yes, one hundred and two!!), who walked up to the stage unaided. We were told she was the winner in the previous Grandparent’s Day four years ago too. She was given the prize with wishes that she would get a hat-trick.

The grandfathers had cricket and some athletic events. For grandmothers there was Rangoli, Hair-styling (they were supposed to style the hair of volunteers), Cooking (display & tasting of precooked items). My mother took part in the Cooking and Rangoli competition. She didn’t win any prize though. But all of us thought her creations for the cooking contest - one sweet dish (kalkandu pongal) and a stuffed item (stuffed idiyappam - I couldn’t find a recipe for my mother’s special stuffed idiyappam, I’ll post one if she writes it down for me) deserved a prize. Of course, we were biased :)

While I was viewing the displayed cooked items, I came across a very uniquely done presentation, which I took many photos of. Some of the pictures are my contribution to this theme, thanks to some unknown grandmother at my daughter’s school. (Madam, if by chance you happen to come across this post - contact me, I’ll post an acknowledgement with your name here).

Here are the pictures. Most are self-explanatory. I do not remember what food item was displayed. The display itself was entrancing.

Have a great weekend everyone

  1. Wow, that’s really cool and pretty neat! They went all out and those little food set-ups are just FAB!! Our schools just has a lunch with grandparents … nothing this fancy, for sure.

  5. Vijay, I not only love the creative way the foods are laid out, I also love the way your daughter’s school incorporates family, and extended family. We have so much we could learn from you …

    Thanks for sharing!!!

  6. I think these days the trend to celebrate all the “days” has started. In our times we didn’t have any grandparents day. :(
Here in Mumbai my neighbour’s daughter was asked to bring a small gift (not more than RS 50/- each) for her grandparents and it was presented by her to her grandparents in the school on the day. When they received the surprise gifts, they had tears in their eyes.

    Nice gesture I must say.

  7. We didn’t have such days in our times too Cuckoo.
Most schools here incorporate the family in celebrations nowadays Moof.
I agree with Cuckoo. It is a wonderful gesture.
