Photo Hunt Quiz - Answer

Dr.A got it right. Congratulations.

It is a CT scanogram of a Mac Mini.

Suresh and I did this within a few days of him acquiring a Mac Mini in March 2005. We were (and still are) amazed at the size of the thing. It’s only a bit bigger than my daughter’s lunch box!

We wanted to know how they put all the things that go into a computer into something so small. But we were not crazy like these guys, who show how to take apart a new Mac Mini. Suresh has for many years been radiographing new circuit boards. So doing a CT for a compact computer was the next obvious evolutionary step. The CT techs thought we were crazy but cooperated with us.

The scanogram showed the most details. The actual CT sections, which were done in the coronal plane of the Mini and the axial and sagittal reconstructions were too cluttered to see anything clearly.

I realize this is a very weak cop out from this week’s Photo Hunt. But hey, there is a lot of silicon, aluminium and some lead and copper inside the Mini. And of course there is quite a lot of metal inside the CT scan machine.

YAY! I got it right! Better not put that thing in the MRI. That could be bad. Great pic!

Oh, my! Something different to read about. This is great. And, you all really are die-hard techies! *winks*

    Congrats Dr.A.
    Thanks Jules.

Oh I should have guessed a Mac at least, what with your hint. I knew I could see the circuit board or boards, I did not need the “old scientist” for that. You guys! And people wait months here to get a CT scan if it’s not an emergency.
