Going Green.

I am trying to go green from now on….

…on a red bicycle.

I bought a new bicycle yesterday. My wife and I intend to share it. The shop did not have a metallic red cycle ready last evening, so we had to wait till they delivered it today. I have to remove the garish rubber ‘mudguard‘ from behind the front wheel and the colourful things (they look a bit like bottle cleaning brushes) around the wheel axles. My wife insisted on the basket. I had to give in. The alternative was to buy a pink women’s cycle.

Why metallic red, some may wonder. We wanted something to match our car…

I intend to bike the half a kilometer from home-to-work and the half a kilometer between my two places of work. I should on average be cycling about three kilometers a day. I also intend to ride the bike every morning to the college athletic ground where I usually go walking/jogging. That would be a seven kilometer round trip.

All of this sounds good, and in my imagination I have already lost thirty pounds ;)

It may all turn out differently in reality! Further updates will follow.

I have been talking of getting a bicycle for more than a year now. My wife got so used to me just saying and not doing it, that she almost gave up. I was partly influenced by Ian Hedges, who bought bicycles recently for himself and his wife. Of course I was also influenced by the recent hike in fuel prices.

I am doing my bit for the home economy and reducing my contribution to global warming in the process. Makes me feel glad and warm (especially in my rear end, which is not used to such narrow seats or the effort of pedaling and propelling a huge weight).

Incidentally, this is post number 301. I just noticed that in my WordPress Dashboard. A triple century!! I am hugely impressed by myself. I never thought I would last so long in the blogosphere.

No WAY!!! I have always wanted a red bike with a basket!! I still bring up the subject to my parents when talking about either bikes or things that I always wanted but never got!! I brought it up just the other day, actually! I’m sooo jealous of that bike right now! It looks like a good one!

Now I’m going to want my own bike!! With a basket!! And I have no clue what I’d keep in the basket, but trust me, when I figure it out, it’ll be something awesome. The reason I wanted a basket when I was a kid was so that I’d be able to carry stuff around. I used to walk around in big baggy boy jeans because the pockets were big enough to carry all the stuff I carried around!

    You go, Vijay! :)

    That’s great Vijay!

I haven’t looked back since we got our bikes and am really enjoying getting out and about.

Not practical for me to use it for work; I’m not up to a 19 mile (30km) ride to work. I am feeling a lot fitter and full of energy now I’m exercising again. I hadn’t realised how much difference regular exercise made until I started again.

    Regards,

    Ian

    Thanks Ramona & Sri.

Mary: Go get one with a basket with all the hard cash that you’re making sitting on babies :D The basket is custom-fitted. My wife tried out a couple of baskets to see which one is just right for her shoulder bag o.O

Ian: I agree with you on the regular exercise. The rainy season has started & I’m not too sure if the ground that we walk/jog on will be open everyday. Biking will help. I got the bike for a fraction of what I’d have had to spend on a treadmill. I don’t have space for a treadmill in my house anyway.

I just got some ‘friendly advice’ from my department’s manager. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea if the consultant radiologist came to work on a bicycle. I don’t think I’m going to heed that advice.

Congratulations Vijay, that’s s fine looking cycle and I’m sure you will be svelte in no time at all. Did you get the gaudy lycra suit too, just like the Tour de France, and the aerodynamic helmet?

    Thanks Cuckoo.

JMB: Thanks. I’m going to get a yellow jersey after I convince my pals who go walking with me to switch to cycling. My wife talked (actually stared) me out of getting the helmet, elbow & knee pads, etc,. :D

I’d bare my head if I had a hat on. Someday (very soon, I suspect), I’d follow your pedalsteps.

wow vj, i can’t imagine you on that bike!! i couldn’t get interested in that again, though Alex has been biking again (i’m the one who needs the excercise!) i’ve stuck to my walking for excercise. let us know how you progress.
